Wijkwerking Mariaburg organised 'Een reis naar vroeger' (A journey to the past) during Open Monuments Day. Even more than before, the municipality of Brasschaat, the district of Ekeren and the city of Antwerp cooperated.
"Mariaburgers don't feel so much Brasschatenaar or Ekerenaar. They are quite fierce on their identity. By the way, it is not Mariaburg, but Sint-Mariaburg", says district mayor and historian Koen Palinckx (N-VA) at the start of Open Momumentendag. The Wijkwerking and the Heemkundig Documentatiecentrum put together two walking and cycling brochures, one for Ekeren and one for Brasschaat.
Jo Van Bouwel designed a pedestal in corten steel on which you make a journey through the past on the basis of a panel with old photo and explanatory text and a QR code. You can find the pedestals at 20 different locations. The brothers Ludo and Jo Van Bouwel wrote the texts. During Open Monuments Day, a train drove along the course. The walks and the information boards will be preserved. Brochures are still available. (mawo)
